"When I heard about ‘Plant Your Pants!’, I was inspired to write a poem with the same name. The project is such a brilliant way to get children actively involved in caring for the soil and thinking about serious environmental issues in a playful and constructive way. I hope you enjoy it!" ~ Hannah Whitley (@whittleswords)
PLANT YOUR PANTS!
With your hands or with a trowel,
Scoop a hole into the soil,
Plant your pants in the ground
And firm the earth back down.
Plant your pants in the ground -
Test the land!
Stake the spot and water in,
Then turn your thoughts to wondering
Which insects have become aware
Of your donated underwear.
Plant your pants in the ground -
Test the land!
Think of all the earwigs and ants
Playing in your pants –
Those ever-legged critters
Munching on your knickers!
Plant your pants in the ground -
Test the land!
After sixty days of waiting,
Get your trowel investigating –
Take a butchers at those boxer shorts,
Bloomers, undies, briefs or drawers.
Plant your pants in the ground -
Test the land!
If you find the cotton rotten
that once caressed your bottom,
Then the eating of your seating
Shows the healthy, hearty beating
of a living, breathing, growing, greening ever-giving ground!
Plant your pants in the ground -
Test the land!
But if your pants have not been snacked on
This is something you can act on –
Soil without an appetite,
Needs feeding up and putting right.
Plant your pants in the ground -
Test the land!
Layer with compost, grass or leaves,
Welcome worms and miner bees,
Beetles, slugs and micro beasts
To revel in this earthy feast!
Plant your pants in the ground -
Test the land!
(I hope my Dad will understand
About the need to test the land,
About the need to feed the soil …
Dad, I’m sorry all your pants are spoiled!)
