Ravishing Raveningham Estate
The Raveningham Estate is a traditional rural Estate near Norwich in South Norfolk and home to the Bacon family since 1735. Lord Bacon is a passionate supporter of The Country Trust and one of our Vice Presidents.
The estate has been providing Farm Discovery visits for the charity for over 12 years and holds about 7 visits a year, usually run by Jake Fiennes, Raveningham Hall Estate Manager, who takes a break from his usual duties to show school groups around. His tours concentrate on connecting the dots from farm to fork and help children to discover things about the natural world. He also focuses on how important conservation is on the farm and the benefits for the wider environment. The visits are very hands-on and practical with children being encouraged to explore and look for different grasses and wild flowers as part of the day. Year 3 children from Mile Cross Primary School enjoyed their visit just before the end of term with lots of opportunity to smell, touch, see and explore a wide variety of plants and crops that are grown on the estate,
Lady Bacon often participates in a visit and this was no exception, joining the children in the kitchen garden to give wonderful insights into the plants and herbs and explain how they are used in cooking. She says "It’s wonderful to be able to play a small part in imprinting something about the natural world into a young child's memory".
